Netball South Canterbury

Junior Update

Saturday Morning Netball

We have now completed the three weeks of grading for our Saturday morning competition.  The next seven weeks of netball will be round robin games within the sections of eight that teams in A and B Grade and Competitive Future Ferns have been divided into.  There will then be a week of semi finals and then a finals week.

C Grade will run differently this year due to 11 teams being finalised in that grade and the need for nine weeks of netball.  The 11 teams have been divided into two sections (one of six and the other of five teams).  These sections are based on the results of the three weeks of grading and have teams of mixed ability in them.  After they have played a round robin for five weeks, the two strongest teams from each section will make the ‘top four’ section, the next two strongest teams from each section will make the ‘middle four’ section and the two weakest teams from each section will be in the ‘bottom four’ section.  The teams play round robin within these sections for three weeks and then have a finals weekend where the top two and bottom two of each of those mini sections play each other.  This is difficult to explain but it does work - if you need further clarification, please email Netball South Canterbury.

C Grade netball is not like Future Ferns where players rotate.  C Grade netball is the first year of no rotation.

Points from games will be posted in the downstairs pavilion and on the website for you to keep up to date with.

Please ensure that there is an adult from each team standing together during the game keeping the score.  This maintains credibility with the score and centre pass.

Competitive Future Ferns rotate every quarter on a Saturday and coaches must ensure they are following the rotation correctly.  If there are problems with teams not rotating correctly please see the Junior Committee representative in the upstairs office during the game.

Junior umpires start umpiring this Saturday.  These girls are very new to umpiring and very keen.  The girls will be doing their best and it is important to remember that without an umpire there would be no game.  Please remind adults to keep any negative comments to themselves as poor sportsmanship on the sideline will not be tolerated.  The smiley face signs will be up at the end of each court and if an umpire is having problems they will turn the sign around so either Nicola Howard (the umpire coach) or a Junior Committee member will come and assist them.

Junior Development Programme

The selectors have been watching the first three games of the season and have selected Year 7 and 8 girls to take part in this programme which starts on Wednesday 23 May.  The selected girls will receive letters about this during this week with their acceptance forms due back into Netball South Canterbury this Saturday the 19th May.

Friday afternoon Netball

Friday afternoon netball starts this Friday at 4pm. These players will only rotate at half time and play four eight minute quarters.  Ten days ago all schools received an email that contained an information sheet for all Friday coaches.  Please ensure they have read this.  If you need a copy of this please contact Netball South Canterbury.

There is no netball at Queen’s Birthday weekend (Friday or Saturday).

Invoices have been sent out for the Saturday competition teams and the Friday comp invoices will be sent out next week - $172.50 per team

It has been a great start to the season with players improving each week.  Please continue to support your teams positively and applaud good play by both teams.
