Bluestone Murals
At Bluestone School there are several murals and each tells an important part of the growth of the school. By the Raymond Street gate is a mural that shows the origin of Bluestone. When a local volcano, Mt Horrible, erupted it oozed a layer of basalt (bluestone) across the region. It created a solid foundation.
The Think Tank mural |
Each learning community has a mural that reflects the team name and purpose.
Designed and painted by the Year 7 & 8 students. It shows the different smarts that the students possess and seek to develop. The guitar shape symbolises musical smarts, the Chess piece - logic, a book - word smart, a butterfly - nature smart, a hand - kinesthetic, and a person - people smart. The smarts are framed by two faces looking beyond to show students looking beyond themselves.
The High Flyers mural |
Designed and painted by the Year 5 & 6 students. South Canterbury’s Richard Pearse’s plane is featured, the plane that was arguably the first in the world in which a pilot achieved controlled flight. Students wanted to reflect their team ideals of aiming high, achieving well and being innovative and risk takers.
The Team Explorer mural |
Designed to reflect the journey of exploration that the Year 3 & 4 students embark upon as they discover and explore new learning, the mural was painted by a parent, Jenny Kerr.
The Creative Creature mural |
Designed and painted by the Year 1 & 2 students. Small creatures are featured symbolising the New Entrant students as they emerge and begin on their journey in learning.
Local artist Anthony Fowler spray-painted this impressive mural depicting Maui and his brothers catching and slowing down the sun. The mural covers a wall 14 meters long and 5 meters high and tells the story in a mixture of storyboard sections and a feature wall. The mural took several months to complete and is clearly visible from a distance and at the end of the school grounds.
Local artist and school parent, Debbie Crowe, painted a number of book characters to encourage the students into the library to find the books that contain the characters depicted. Junior children in particular can often be seen admiring the murals and even holding a great conversation with their favourite characters!
Local artist and school parent, Penni Naylor, created several mosaic boards that depict creative creatures and are displayed in the Junior area of our school.

The Student Mosaics |
Several mosaic tile pictures were created by students and placed on the columns at the entrance to Planet Bluestone.
Anthony Fowler a former student of Timaru West (the site of Bluestone) spray painted 5 mural boards, each displaying one of the values at the heart of Bluestone school. HEART (Honesty, Excellence, Aroha, Respect, Tolerance) These are proudly displayed on a clearly visible school fence and remind everyone of the values we expect to see reflected in actions and interactions.
