Bluestone School is a Human Rights in Education School HRiE

At Bluestone we recognise the 3 R’s

Rights

Responsibilities

Respect

Rights and responsibilities go hand in hand. In order to have our own rights respected every person has the responsibility of behaving toward other people in a respectful way. For example, people learn and contribute more in a classroom where they feel safe volunteering ideas, are listened to, and are considerate of each other. At Bluestone School we recognise the importance of Human Rights.

Students learn about rights and responsibilities. Understanding promotes good citizenship, support for each other and a positive environment.

Students create class agreements that highlight rights and the responsibilities that go with these. We focus on the difference between wants and needs. Human Rights are based on needs.

Human Rights in Education, HRiE, strengthens our values and develops our skills of thinking, managing self, relating to others, and participating & contributing.

HRiE creates a school culture that supports learning, generates enthusiasm and responsibility, and helps young people develop as NZ and global citizens.

Whole school adoption of a human rights approach leads to : improved self-esteem, interpersonal relationships, and teacher-satisfaction; reduced absenteeism, bullying and vandalism; academic results.

Through HRiE children understand that their own rights are linked with a wide range of personal responsibilities, students begin to behave like citizens, with stronger citizenship behaviours in 3 areas: respect for the rights of others, respect for property, and level of participation.

A rights respecting culture is built in the classroom, and throughout the school. Rights and responsibilities agreements are negotiated.

Decision making makes reference to relevant rights and responsibilities.

HRiE creates active citizenship.
